Who We Are
The Rivertown Center for Yoga & Health is the only Kripalu-affiliated yoga studio located in picturesque Westchester County, NY serving the Rivertowns of Dobbs Ferry, Hastings on Hudson, Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Irvington, NY. For over 20 years, our compassionate and gentle approach has been offering students the opportunity to practice yoga, learn mindfulness and reconnect to body, mind and spirit.
Together, we are a sangha (community) where like-minded people gather to support one another and to deepen their practice. As such, we welcome YOU and your unique gifts for every one of us is a wave in the great ocean.
At the heart of all our activities – classes, workshops and song – is a reverence for the sacred and the interconnectedness of all life. We hope you can join us on this journey!
Kripalu yoga – the style we practice here – helps us have an experience of oneness, a sense that our body, mind, heart, and spirit are connected. The word yoga actually means union, or “already-oneness”. To become mindful of that gift and to cultivate it on and off the mat is the purpose of The Rivertown Center for Yoga & Health.
In today’s busy world we are encouraged to look outside ourselves for things, places, and people to fulfill our wishes. The ancient teachings remind us that we already are that which we are seeking. All we need do is stop, relax, and let go of what keeps us from knowing it. Our suffering is the direct result of stress caused by internal conflicts that drain our energy. This is what keeps us from experiencing inner peace, deep knowing, harmony, and the love of the universe. When we take time to fill ourselves from the inside, we have so much more to share with the world. We feel more alive physically, our minds are more peaceful, our hearts are more open, and we awaken to the divine light of conscious awareness. The Benefits of Yoga
The physical practice of yoga strengthens and stretches the skeletal and muscular systems, stimulates and regulates hormonal and immune systems, and improves digestion, circulation, and respiration. Yoga postures are just the beginning of the journey. They are the entry to the more subtle bodies of mind, emotions, and energy. When we practice, our emphasis is on awakening the body’s natural wisdom to free its inborn healing power, and on aligning with our true self and inner knowing.
When we listen inwardly, we open to receive the guidance of divine wisdom that directs our life in all situations. We ease into the flow of life and allow ourselves to be carried by the river. Each day that we practice, we learn through our asanas (poses) and our pranayama (breath) how to release the built up tensions. Finally, we discover something much deeper and loving that will be with us the minute we walk out the door. Kripalu yoga is transformative!
